Courtney has that element of danger. You never know what she’s going to do next. We’re not used to seeing that in a woman. We’re used to seeing that from Jim Morrison, or Iggy Pop, or from Johnny Rotten in the early days of the Sex Pistols. She’s a rock star in the sort of unpredictable, volatile way that people voyeuristically expect. But if she had not made a really great record, which she did, none of that would matter.
He wanted people to believe that. I don’t think he was ripping them off, either. He wanted that part of himself to be free, but he didn’t go through with that, because that wasn’t his preference…I left him with Michael Stipe one night and told him to go explore his cravings. ‘Big talker, go on!’ I told him. All he’d ever done was kiss some guy in high school and some kid in a club. He came back the next day, and I started screaming, ‘What happened? He said, ‘I dunno. It was just weird. Nothing happened, but sort of I’ll never know. Michael’s never told me.
Oh my god, cringe at people acting like Courtney Love giving up the rights to Kurt Cobain’s image is some sort of “triumph” over Courtney.
1) It happened 2 years ago.
2) Courtney voluntarily gave up the rights to Kurt’s image to Frances in return for a loan from Frances’ trust fund. Pretty fair deal if you ask me.
So, no. Nobody forcibly took the rights from her and gave them to Frances, it was a legal decision made in 2010 that presumably suited all parties.
And to the many posts I’ve seen spouting such ignorant bullshit as “TODAY IS A GREAT DAY FOR NIRVANA FANS YAAAAAY” etc. erm, how is it? When has Courtney ever used Kurt’s image in an inappropriate or disrespectful way? You don’t see him on lunchboxes or novelty items or see his likeness advertising crap like you do other iconic dead celebrities, and who’ve we got to thank for that? Courtney.
Courtney has done a damn good job preserving his image, remember she kicked up a fuss over them making Kurt a muppet? I bet anything that if Courtney had allowed that and it was Dave and Krist saying it was disrespectful to him etc. everyone would be saying how awful and disgusting and money grabbing she is, but cause it’s the other way round, it’s fine and she’s overreacting and a “crazy bitch”. Yawn.
